reduce trash, improve soils, upcycle
Albuquerque residents produce tons of trash each week. About half is paper/cardboard or kitchen waste.
Worms! Worms can process up to their body weight in food (kitchen scraps) and bedding (paper/cardboard) EACH DAY!
Albuquerque soils are typical of most desert arroyo basins; too much clay if not too sandy, high pH, poor water retention and low in organics.
Worms! Worm castings add plant ready nutrients for instant growth. They also create micro-biomes with pro-biotics and organics for long term soil improvement.
Plant ready. Worm castings turn clay, sand and depleted dirt into productive soil. Gently mix a spoonful or so around a a potted plant or a handful around a garden plant, water as usual and watch the plants take off! Repeat every month or so and watch your plants AND your soil improve. Castings provide minerals, and nutrients in plant ready form and are also full of "pro"-biotics which improve the soil.
DIY Make your own castings! Help reduce waste! No smell! Easy! ("If it's hard, you're doing it wrong.") Worms double in population about every 6 weeks.

We started with Fred's worm castings which helped turn our unhospitable dirt into productive soil. Now we have our own two bucket system and have been able to drastically cut down on our paper waste. The bonus is we are now creating our own castings as well! It's fun and productive for the whole family!
